Know Your Credit Scores.... for FREE!

I recently stumbled upon this website called Credit Karma. Its a free credit checking website, and I do mean FREE.  You simply sign up for a free account and they pull your credit info for you. Credit Karma gives you helpful tips on how to save more money, and does not require a $1 hold with your credit card like the major credit bureaus do.  They have different types of "calculators" and a credit simulation page where you can pretend to add different things that will effect your credit like a new credit card, a loan, or closing a credit card, or raising your credit limit on a card. When you click on these certain things it will then tell you how its going to effect your credit, either negatively or positively.

It is so important to success in life, if you have poor credit banks view you as a risk, so this means no mortgage loans, no car loans, no student loans, or a loan with an incredibly high interest rate. Yeah, you may get the money you want, but you spend the next 30 years paying off the interest.

Some corporations only hire people with great credit, because it shows that you are responsible. Regardless of the situation that got you into debt, corporations don't look at the why, they look at the numbers.

Another important reason to have good credit is that rental places, if you aren't planning on buying a house just yet, look at credit scores too. They, like the corporations, use it as a way to view how responsible you are. If you pay your bills on line and aren't head over heels in debt, then you will have enough money to rent from them. Ask yourself, do you really want to be sleeping on the streets or living in a 'dump' because of your credit score?

There are many ways that your credit can be damaged:
  • Your "identity" or social security or has been stolen.
  • You own multiple department store credit cards and they are all maxed out.
  • You have been late on credit card payments in the past.
  • You haven't paid your student loans
  • You late on your car payments
  • Have been turned over to collections for money issues.
  • Are behind on mortgage or rent payments
  • Have had to file for bankruptcy in the past 10 years.
  • Late on child support
If you find that you fall under anything in the list above, don't freak out. First go to Credit Karma, make a profile and find out if your credit is in serious trouble. Second, grab all your bills and sort through them. Even though you have back payments due on your credit cards it is important to not get further behind, so make sure you are paying the minimums on all your cards, this will protect your credit from becoming worse.

Once you have paid the minimums, find the biggest thing that is effecting your credit at the moment. Whether its your mortgage, car loan, or a credit card, find the one that is most deliquent. For the next 5 months you should then try your best to pay double or triple payments on this card. It will be amazing to you how much money you can put toward a deliquent account if you put your mind to it.

Now, this may mean that for the next 5-6 months you wont be able to buy those adorable gray suede pumps you have had your eye on, even if they just went on sale. It also means that you might have to pass up on dinner with friends, or going to the movies. But if you let them know that you are trying to be responsible and get some things paid off, they will most likely understand. Whats more? Just think how great you will feel once you can finally pay off that card or past due loan!!

After you pay off your first deliquent account, then move onto the next one. Take the money that you were paying toward the first bill and combine it with the minimum you are paying on the next one and with the new (larger payment), you will pay that one off FASTER!!  It's like a snowball effect, but in a good way!!  It may take you a few years, but hey! Once it is all paid off you will finally be debt free and your future will be bright once more. So get your credit check on at Credit Karma, and start tackling your debt today!

My Fitness Pal

One of my goals this year is to lose 50 pounds.  Well, truth be told, I actually want to lose about 70.

I have found this FREE website that allows me to log my food (calories), my exercises, and to keep track of how much water I'm drinking!  It has a large database of foods and exercises and you plug in your weight and it figures out the calories for you.

You set your own "goals", how many calories you want to have per day, etc.  It even has a section for Recipes where you enter your recipe - all of the individual ingredients, and how many people the recipe serves, and then viola! - it will tell you how many calories, fat grams, sugar, protein, etc are in a serving of that recipe.  I LOVE IT!  and did I say that it's FREE?

It also has blogs and message boards where you can go and read about other people that are having issues with the same things that you are.... and you will have your very own blog as well!

I uploaded the myfitnesspal app (also FREE) to my droid phone and do most of my logging (calories and exercises) right from my phone.  You can link it to your facebook account and when you come in at the end of the day UNDER your calorie goal for the day - it automatically posts that great news to your facebook profile!  (Don't worry - if you went over your goal for the day - it doesn't call you out on facebook, it simply states that you completed your food diary for the day and leaves it at that!!)

You may have seen the Weight Watchers commercials on tv of their version of this exact same thing - and even though they say that it's free (to sign up) - we all know that WW is NOT FREE!

It's set up very similar to facebook in that you can make "friends" on the site and they will offer encouragement to you on your weight loss journey.  I think it's awesome that people I've never met - but all have the same goal as me (to lose weight) - come together and offer encouragement and advice.

If you are trying to lose a few pounds (and aren't we all?) I hope that you'll check it out!  If you do, look me up and add me as a "friend".  I'm gracete on there.

Calcium & Osteoporosis

I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis several years ago when I was only in my mid 40's.  I got a hairline fracture in my foot (just behind my toes around the ball of my foot) from walking.  I delivered the early morning paper here in Columbus and walked approximately 4-5 miles every morning - loaded down with newspapers.

The hairline fracture didn't show up in a normal x-ray.  They had to do a bone scan to find it.  It was during that bone scan that they also noticed other places in my body (bones/joints) where I was also calcium deficient.  That's when I was told that I had Osteoporosis.  Since then, I have been taking calcium supplements and trying to make sure that I drink more milk.

Back in 2002 I was in a car accident where my knees hit the steering column (I rear-ended someone and didn't have my seat belt on).  Ever since then, I have had pain in both of my knees - which seems to get worse as I get older (go figure!)   A couple of years ago it had gotten to the point where it was very painful to get up out of a chair (pushing up with just my legs and my knees) so in an effort to "baby" my knees (in the hopes that they would get better if I babied them for awhile) I began to help to "push" myself up by using my hands - in other words, most of the weight of my body would be on my hands, not on my knees as I pushed myself up into a standing position.  (I'm sure that it doesn't help that I'm about 50 pounds overweight too.)

Anyways, after "babying" my knees this way for several months, they seemed to me to be getting worse - not better.  So I went in to my doctor to see if I might be a candidate for that knee replacement surgery.  He took x-rays of both of my knees while I was standing on them.  He told me that there was nothing physically wrong with my knees - that I had arthritis and was developing osteoporosis in both of them!  He said that "babying" them like I was was actually making the situation worse.  You see, if you have osteoporosis, and you don't have enough calcium in your blood, then your body takes the calcium out of bones and/or joints that are not very active.  My doctor said that he didn't want me to "baby" them any more, in fact, the best thing for me might be to try to jog a little every morning.  The bone-on-bone impact in my knees while jogging (even just for a few miinutes) would be enough to begin to stimulate new bone growth in my knee joints.

I must admit that I still do not jog (unless I'm out walking in the wee hours of the morning when it is dark and no one can see me jogging).  But I have stopped babying my knees.  I also take an incredible product put out by Usana called Procosa which has helped my knee joints tremendously.

Calcium is essential for maintaining strong bones as well as for muscle and nerve functioning. Calcium is stored in the bones and teeth; when calcium levels in the blood fall, more calcium is removed from the bones.

Doctors say that women begin losing calcium from their bones around the age of 30.  It accelerates after the age of 50.  Obviously, my story shows that these numbers aren't set in stone.  Women's calcium requirements increase from 1,000 milligrams (mg) from ages 19 through 50 to 1,200 mg after 50.  Teen girls need to be getting 1,300 mg per day.  In my opinion, even though it might not be noticed for many years - the problem starts way back here in the teen years if girls are not getting the calcium that they need.

All women over 50 years of age need 1,200 mg of calcium and 700 IU (international units) of Vitamin D per day.  Women who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis need 800 to 1,000 IUs of Vitamin D each day.

Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. It is also important that you get enough magnesium. This is needed to balance your calcium intake.  Vitamin D assists calcium to enter your blood stream and fuse to your bones.  Your body can only absorb about 500 mg of calcium at a time, so if you supplement with calcium, take no more than 500 mg doses at any one time.

According to the National Institutes of Health, caffeine will cause your bones to excrete calcium (about 2 mg per cup of coffee).  Wow, I can't help but think about the millions of young girls that are drinking Mt. Dew on a daily basis....

Alcohol makes it difficult for calcium to be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.  Even one night of drinking causes temporary PTH deficiency and increased urinary calcium excretion.  That means you are losing calcium from your body.

Furthermore, if you choose to drink chronically, Vitamin D metabolism will be obstructed, and you will not be able to absorb the calcium that you get from your diet.

According to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, postmenopausal women who get most of their calcium from foods have a greater bone density than those who simply rely on calcium pills.

A recent university study found that women who increased their calcium intake by as little as 130 mg a day lost more weight tan those who didn't.  In a mouse study, those who were placed on a diet with a lot of calcium lost 42% of their body fat.  The mice who didn't get the extra calcium lost only 8%!

The best source of calcium known is raw milk.  However, since a lot of people are lactose intolerant, the next best source is dark, green leafy vegetables including spinach and turnip, collard, and mustard greens.  Sesame seeds are another great source, as well as salmon, sardines, marckerel, oats, and almonds.  Calcium from dietary sources are usually better absorbed than from supplements.

My new "salon" is open for business!

I'm so excited.... this week I have given my first few massages to people at my new location in Gahanna. Unfortunately, I was sick last week and even though I am better this week - I still don't feel like I am back to 100%.  I've just been "dragging" a little bit and can't seem to get back to a full 100%.

But I have been decorating my room at the Herb Center - I made black curtains to keep out the afternoon sun (my bay window faces west) and brought several plants, a small stereo for music, and a small lamp (for low lighting) down there too.  The walls are plaster, so I'm having a little trouble getting the curtain rods in the walls.  I need a recliner to do pedicures, but don't think that I can get one up the narrow stairs (I'm on the 2nd floor).... not sure what I'm going to do about that.  I also need a small cart on wheels that I can pull over next to the massage table as I want to give complimentary paraffin wax treatments (hands) during the massage.

Anyway, other than that, it's coming along nicely, and I promise I'll post pictures soon!   In the meantime, be sure to schedule your appointment for your $35 Swedish Massage on my website at http://www.teresagrace.com/ .  Also, be sure to "LIKE" my Teresa Grace Massage facebook page to have your name entered into a drawing for a FREE 60-minute Swedish Massage (drawing will be April 30, 2011 at noon!)

Guarding Our Hearts....

I spent some quiet time this week trying to get myself back on track.  It's amazing how much drama someone can bring into your life if you are not careful!  I met someone a few weeks ago, and within a matter of just a few weeks, this person brought more drama into MY life than I have had in YEARS!  The funniest part of this whole mess is that this person had professed all along to not like any drama in his life.

REALLY?  Wow.  Well, perhaps he didn't like people causing any drama in HIS life, but he sure brought a 'whole lotta mess' into mine!

This whole experience has really got me to thinking about the many ways that we need to "guard our hearts".

The NLT (New Living Translation) of the Bible says to "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life."  Proverbs 4:23 (NLT).  The Amplified Bible says it this way:  "Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life".

However it came about, "letting my guard down" these past few weeks has certainly caused my "springs of life" to get all jacked up!

Father - forgive me for not being vigilant about guarding my heart.  Thank You for Your protection, when I was foolish and not being very cautious with my heart.

Please help me to learn how to hear You more, how to trust You more, and how to wait on You.  Please help me to not get sidetracked so easily, and to not lose sight of what is really important - my relationship with YOU.  Help me to learn how to listen to You more carefully.   I know that Your words bring life and healing, so let them penetrate deep into my heart.

Let the river of Your living water, begin flowing again back in my life.

Proverbs 4 (New Living Translation)

Proverbs 4

A Father’s Wise Advice
1 My children,[a] listen when your father corrects you.
Pay attention and learn good judgment,
2 for I am giving you good guidance.
Don’t turn away from my instructions.
3 For I, too, was once my father’s son,
tenderly loved as my mother’s only child.
 4 My father taught me,
   “Take my words to heart.
Follow my commands, and you will live.
5 Get wisdom; develop good judgment.
Don’t forget my words or turn away from them.
6 Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you.
Love her, and she will guard you.
7 Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!
And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.
8 If you prize wisdom, she will make you great.
Embrace her, and she will honor you.
 9 She will place a lovely wreath on your head;
she will present you with a beautiful crown.”
10 My child,[b] listen to me and do as I say,
and you will have a long, good life.
 11 I will teach you wisdom’s ways
and lead you in straight paths.
 12 When you walk, you won’t be held back;
when you run, you won’t stumble.
13 Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go.
Guard them, for they are the key to life.
14 Don’t do as the wicked do,
and don’t follow the path of evildoers.
15 Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way.
      Turn away and keep moving.
16 For evil people can’t sleep until they’ve done their evil deed for the day.
They can’t rest until they’ve caused someone to stumble.
17 They eat the food of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence!
18 The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.
19 But the way of the wicked is like total darkness.
They have no idea what they are stumbling over.
20 My child, pay attention to what I say.
      Listen carefully to my words.
21 Don’t lose sight of them.
Let them penetrate deep into your heart,
22 for they bring life to those who find them,
and healing to their whole body.
23 Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.
 24 Avoid all perverse talk;
      stay away from corrupt speech.
 25 Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
 26 Mark out a straight path for your feet;
      stay on the safe path.
 27 Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.

Making Pancakes...

someone sent this to me in an email.... it is SO cute, and SO VERY TRUE!

Six year-old Brandon decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes. He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor.

He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten.

Brandon was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad.

He didn't know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove and he didn't know how the stove worked!. Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor.
Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky.
And just then he saw Dad standing at the door. Big crocodile tears welled up in Brandon 's eyes. All he'd wanted to do was something good, but he'd made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But his father just watched him.

Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process
!
That's how God deals with us.. We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess. Our marriage gets all sticky or we insult a friend, or we can't stand our job, or our health goes sour.
Sometimes we just stand there in tears because we can't think of anything else to do. That's when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him.

But just because we might mess up, we can't stop trying to "make pancakes" for God or for others. Sooner or later we'll get it right, and then they'll be glad we tried...

Lessons learned...

Wow, this has been quite a week for me.  Lots of stress and "drama".  Trying to get my life back into the "drama-free" zone.... hehe.

Someone sent me this today - thanks, I needed this.  How appropriate....

If you plant HONESTY, you will reap trust,
If you plant GOODNESS, you will reap friends,
If you plant HUMILITY, you will reap greatness,
If you plant PERSEVERANCE, you will reap contenment,
If you plant CONSIDERATION, you will reap perspective,
If you plant HARD WORK, you will reap success,
If you plant FORGIVENESS, you will reap reconciliation.

So be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.     -author unknown

disappointment...

As many of you know, I have been planning (for 2 years now) to go on an Alaskan Cruise for my 50th birthday - which is in May of this year.  Unfortunately, it looks like I am not going to be able to go after all.  Due to some unforeseen issues, my dear friend that was supposed to go on this cruise with me - will not be able to attend.   Worse, is that the deadline for final payment of the cruise is Friday 3/4, and it is too short notice to find someone else to go with me.

Perhaps I will re-schedule and try to go later on in the year.  I have been thinking how nice it would be to take my mother to Alaska for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

They say that everything happens for a reason, and only God knows why as well as how truly disappointed I am right now.  But I trust Him and know that not only does He see and know things that I do not, but He always loves me and protects me.

UPDATE:  On 3/03/11 I did cancel my Alaska Cruise for this year.  I was able to re-book for next year and will take my mother.  I was able to get all of my money refunded, and plan to go to Las Vegas for my 50th birthday instead.  Besides, if I go before May of 2012, I will STILL be 50 - right?  It's either that or I might just have to "hold off" on my 50th birthday until the cruise next year!  This is definately going to be a lesson in patience!

It's A Go!

Everything is coming together!  PRAISE THE LORD!  I've received word that the City of Gahanna is going to let me rent the large room on the 2nd floor of the Ohio Herb Education Center building on Mill Street in Gahanna!  They are currently drawing up a contract and things should be ready to go very soon!  I want to say a special "thank you" to all my friends and co-workers who have been praying with me about this.

LOST: 9 inches - and 4 miles tonight!

When I started this "exercise" thing the first of the year, it was all I could do to walk one mile a day and two on the weekend days!  Not only because I was out of shape, but because it was so BORING to do it on the treadmill!!  My January goal was to walk on the treadmill at least 5 out of 7 days each week.  My February goal is to walk 14 miles every week!  Which is only 2 miles a day - but if I miss a day - I HAVE TO MAKE IT UP!  So far I've done VERY well with that goal!

In fact, I'm so excited to announce that I took my measurements today, and I have lost a total of 9 inches (3 of which are around my waist, and 2 on my hips!!)  I was DELIGHTED!   I knew that when the weather broke and I had more opportunities to walk outside, I would be able to increase it!  I'm also thinking about getting the Zumba DVD's (to do in the privacy of my home - haha) or today my girlfriend told me about a ballet class that she takes at the church!  It is a strenuous 2.5 hours on Sat mornings, and I'm positive that I will have to work up to that, but I think that it will help to boost my weight loss.  I'll keep you posted!

I'm also thinking of signing up for Weight Watchers (which they also have at the church) because I need the accountability and need to be able to know each week how much I have (or have NOT) lost!  I don't have a bathroom scale here at home, so I don't have any idea how much weight I've lost.  I know what my starting point was, so I'll have to get back to you on THAT number!  Also, I want a friend that can have the same goals as myself and we can share our experiences.

As of today, my countdown shows that I have 89 days until my Alaskan Cruise!  I'm excited about losing some of this weight before we go... but wish that I would have started just a little bit sooner!
Picture

I also wish that I would have done a "before" picture and then an "after" picture.... but I have enough pictures around here that I think I can use one of these for my "before" picture.   Here's one from June 2010 - notice the big baggy clothes?
Picture

... and one from July 2010 - again, I'm not very petite. (smile) but - ENOUGH of that!  I'm well on my way and will be posting "as we lose" pictures along the way just for fun!  Stay tuned!

FINALLY! The waiting is over...

...and I am now a "Licensed Massage Therapist".  It was a gruelling 8 weeks and 3 days!  Not sure why it takes to long to run about 600+ scantron tests through a machine to get some grades, but hey - it's finally over!

And, in the SAME DAY, I received an email from a friend asking me to come to the Ohio Herb Education Center in Gahanna for tea!  Once I got there, we visited and had some great hot tea!  I told her my exciting new news and she said that I would be a great "fit" to rent the room upstairs for my massage business!  Oh my!

First of all, the building is in a great spot in downtown Gahanna with easy access from the freeway and very easy to find if someone has never been there before.  There is free parking behind the building.  (Wait, it gets better...)

..the room is absolutely PERFECT!  It is huge - more than enough room to do couples' massage which requires plenty of room for 2 therapists to walk around 2 tables (in the same room at the same time!).  Also, it's large enough to have a retail display area, it has it's own private bathroom, she is willing to give me a 30-day "trial period" if I want, and the weekly rent is absolutely affordable!!

Is GOD good or what?

So now, please pray with me that the City of Gahanna will approve it, and that I can hurry up and get started.  I too think that it is a great fit as the Herb Society is all about herbal teas, and aromatherapy, and holistic healing.

Also pray that when I order my hydraulic massage table, it will fit up the narrow stairs to the second floor!

Cruise Alaska!

In about 4 short months, I will going on an Alaskan Cruise in honor of my 50th birthday (I keep thinking that if I say that enough times, I will get used to hearing it - so far, it's not working!)
Picture

This week I have to get my paperwork off for my passport.  I am really getting excited and getting into visualizing this cruise already.  Isn't this beautiful?  I also am on the email list for Shutterfly Travel Club which goes all over the world!  Check out their website and some of the destinations they will be going to this year on their website    http://www.shutterflytravel.com/.  If you love to travel, you simply MUST check it out!  It's free and all are welcome!

Picture

Our cruise will be 7 days, then we will take the train into Denali National Park and stay there one night.  From there, we travel to the Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge, where we will stay 2 nights.  We are thinking of going white water rafting or perhaps touring a glacier by helicopter.  In any case, I promise to take LOTS of pictures and post them for you on my photo blog http://www.teresagrace.blogspot.com/
